Auli is known as Indian Switzerland ,considered the best skiing slope in Asia. Both sides of the slope are covered with oak and coniferous trees which break the speed of the wind and this makes it ideal for skiing.
Ropeway in Auli Another attraction here is a sight-seeing trip between Joshimath and Auli by a ropeway. This ropeway is 4 km long one and is called the Rajju and is at a height of 1917 mts to 3027 mts above sea level. This is the longest and the second highest ropeway in Asia. Two passenger cabins are used in this. Each cabin can accommodate from 20 to 25 people. This whole trip passes through ten towers. On the eighth tower of the ropeway one can stop because this is where one gets off for skiing and looking in and around Auli. It takes about half an hour to complete this trip.
Right in front of Auli, is one of the highest peak, Nanda Devi. Along with it can be seen the Hathigauri, Neelkanth, Comet and Eravath mountains.
Auli is a grazing land spread over 6 kms. In the local language they call this "Byugal". In summer, in the old days, the local villagers used to graze their cattle here. During monsoons thousands of different variety of flowers bloom here.

Trishul Peak
One of the most ski-friendly ranges of Auli, the legendary Trishul peak is 23,490 feet high. Even before the ski resort tourism marked its debut on the slopes of Auli, the Trishul and other Auli peaks were used by the ski-equipped patrolling officers of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force as a training ground. It is said that in a 1958 expedition to scale the Trishul Peak, it took the mountaineers four days to climb and just 90 minutes to ski down to their base camp. There is a lake, Roopkand, at the bottom of the slopes of Trishul Peak. It is also known as the mystery lake because over 600 skeletal remains of humans and horses were discovered from here.
Winter Ski Resort
Auli is a famed winter ski resort. In winters, the slopes of Auli are clad with a snow carpet as deep as 3 meters. The skiing season in Auli ranges from January to March every year. Skiing on 10-20 kms of clean stretches of slopes thickly coated with snow in Auli snow is as good as an international skiing experience. Auli offers world class facilities for experienced skiers and beginners can also sign up for one week or two week long skiing courses. Everything from lodging to boarding facilities is easily available for skiers.
Joshimath
The revered sage AdiShankaracharya is believed to have wandered and gained enlightenment in Joshimath. There are two famous temples, Narsingh and Garuda temple, to visit in Joshimath. Another attraction is the Amar Kalp tree which is believed to be some 2,500 years old. One can also check out the hot springs of Tapovan located at a distance of 14 kms from Joshimath and 32 kms from Auli.
Nanda Devi National Park
The Nanda Devi National park is located at a distance of 41 kms from Auli. Adorned with beautiful environs and abundant flora and fauna including Brahma- kamal and Bharal, it is a major attraction four tourists who come to Auli. Not more than two groups of visitors are allowed to move in the park in a day. The maximum limit for a week is four groups of visitors. Visitors are accompanied by a registered guide. The terrain is hilly and tough, so, visitors should take care to take all the precautionary steps.

If you're an adventure freak and do not mind the cold, the best time to visit Auli is during the winter season. The period from late November to late March is generally considered ideal for skiers. As the winters set in, the mountains are covered with snow and very suitable for ski runs. At this time one can even take ski courses if you are a beginner and advanced ski courses if you need to enhance your skills.

How to Reach Auli by Air
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant which is 17 km from Rishikesh and 25 km from Dehradun. Flight operate from Delhi and Chandigarh. The distance by road to Auli is around 300 kms. Once you get to Rishikesh, hire a taxi or take bus service to Joshimath and Auli thereafter.

The nearest railway is at Haridwar, 289 km from Auli. From Haridwar one can hire a taxi or take bus to make the journey to Auli via Joshimath.The road journey should take around 10-11 hours.

Traveling to Auli by road can be a great experience. There are regular road services that run from Delhi (500kms),Dehradun (316,) Rishikesh (264)and Haridwar to Joshimath, 13 km away. From Joshimath, jeeps and taxis are available for hire to Auli.
By Cable Car The most popular way and scenic way to get Auli is by the famed cable car service from Joshimath which runs for 4 km right up to Auli. The return trip Joshimath-Auli-Joshimath costs about Rs 400 at the time of writing.
