Maratha rulers traded a cluster of 72 peaceful villages, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, to the Portuguese, for a small sum of Rs. 12,000 to retain their friendship. A nationalist movement began in quest for freedom of the land from foreign domination, which finally succeeded after a century and a half in July 1954. An administrator chosen by the people governed this territory between 1954 and 1961. Under the 10th Amendment to the Indian Constitution, the territories of Dadra & Nagar Haveli were integrated into the Indian Union in 1961.
