Yelagiri is a cluster of 14 hamlets in between four mountains spread over an area of 30 sq km having an altitude of 3500 ft. The tribal people who live here are engaged in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, etc. Orchards, rose gardens and green valleys, surround these hills.

The main town of Yelagiri Hills is Athanavur, which comprises a winding road through the hills with isolated villages. The Whole of Yelagiri was once the private property of the Yelagiri Zamindar Family. It was taken over by the government of India during the Early 1950s. The house of the Yelagiri Zamindars still exists in Reddiyur.

Yelagiri is also one of the famous places for trekkers. The highest point in Yelagiri is the Swamimalai Hill, standing tall at 4,338 ft with spectacular views. The hill provides a good number of trekking trails through thick reserved forests. There are other trekking options that include smaller peaks like Javadi Hills and Palamathi Hills. The Punganur Lake is a manmade lake and one of the popular attractions of the region. Paragliding is another sport that's drawing visitors. The Velavan Temple, Jalagamparai Waterfalls and Nature Park are the other attractions in Yelagiri.

Yelagiri Summer festival celebrated in May end is organized by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development. Stalls from different departments, flower show, various cultural programs and Dog Show with a variety of dog breeds are conducted every year. People from all over the State and other parts of the country participate in this annual festival.

The Punganoor Lake

This lake is the main attraction in Yelagiri. It is an artificial lake created by man so as to enhance the beauty of the place to attract more tourists. While adults can enjoy boating either in a rowboat or a pedal boat, there is a Mughal Garden around the lake with interesting play equipment for kids too.

The Velvan Temple

This temple was constructed in the memory of Lord Murugan and sits atop a hillock. Standing on top of the hill, you can have a wonderful view of the large plains lying beneath the mountains. On the entrance of the temple you will find a giant statue of Gadothgajan. All the local festivals are celebrated with great pomp and gaiety in the temple. The best time to visit Yelagiri would be in the months of July and August when there are frequent festivals celebrated one after the other. The entire region comes to life with a beautiful blend of colors and culture.

Swamimalai hills

Swamimalai hills is another popular sightseeing destination in Yelagiri. Swami malai hills are in the form of a cake with strong base at the bottom and high peak of the hills that seem to touch the sky. This is a great place for trekking and picnics as the highest peak is about 4338 meters from the ground level and people love climbing the great heights at a stretch. There are many more peaks in the neighbourhood like Javadi Hills, Pallamathi Hills and the like which are easier to climb. If traveling by road to reach the hill, tourists have to drive through the peaceful and serene Mangalam village that also has a lotus pond.

Jalagamparai Waterfalls

The water falls is a little distance away from Yelagiri, created by the Attaru River that flows through the Yelagiri Hills. It is a beautiful place to visit especially in the months between November and February as this is the time when they are fully loaded with water. The government silk farm situated here is famous for its mulberry plantations, where tourists can also visit to get to see them from close quarters. This place is also a great place as a picnic spot.

The best time to visit Yelagiri is from November to February when the weather is pleasant enough to enjoy the sightseeing and outdoor activities and the weather ranges between 11°C and 25°C. All throughout the year, this place experiences moderate climate.

This is also the time when two major festivals are celebrated. Diwali is celebrated in October and Pongal is celebrated in January. Get to be a part of the festive season.

During the summer season, from March to June, temperature varies between 18°C and 34°C. The monsoon season arrives in July and extends up to September. Yelagiri receives average rainfall during this season.

How to Reach Yelagiri by road ?
The drive from Chennai to Yelagiri will take 4.5 hours. From Chennai, drive on NH 4 to Ranipettai and take the NH 46 via Vellore, and Ambur to Vaniyambadi. From Ponneri, follow the signboards leading up to Yelagiri Hills. If you are driving from Bangalore, take the Bangalore-Hosur-Krishnagiri-Vaniyambadi-Yelagiri route.
