According to the history, the city was named after the god of Valor-Vishakha. It was a part of the Kalinga Kingdom, under Ashoka's rule in 260 B.C. It passed on later to the Andhra Kings of Vengi. After this Pallava,

Chola and Ganga dynasties ruled the city.In the 15th century, Vishakhapatnam became a part of the Vijayanagar Empire.

Dolphin’s Nose

Dolphin’s Nose being as picturesque a place as the name implies. A one of a kind rock promontory that juts out over the Bay of Bengal is open to visitors from 3pm to 5pm in the evening. This is a must-visit site as one gets a fabulous view of the expanse of the sea on one side and on the other side the expanse of the spread out city below.

Simhachalam Temple

The 11th century Simhachalam Temple is 16 km from the city and worth a visit. It is one hour drive from city and the Temple is set atop a small hill. Millions of devotees from round the world visit this temple every year.

The VUDA Park

The VUDA Park, a crowd puller is set on the beach front and is a popular picnic spot with its many shade giving trees. The Park is well equipped with a variety of children play pens, boating club and musical fountains.

Kailasagiri Park

Kailasagiri Park is located atop a hill facing the blue waters of the Bay of Bengal. This extensive Park gives you a beautiful panoramic view of the city below and its beautiful beaches. The entire park is lit up at night and looks lovely when viewed from the city below. Interesting features of this park are the Titanic Point, a floral clock and a Toy Train which is very popular with kids.

Beaches in Vizag

Vizag is known for its pristine beaches – Lawson’s Beach, Rishikonda and the Yarada beaches are some of the beautiful beaches that captivate visitors. The R.K. Beach is also a popular choice for visitors to take a stroll and watch the waves lick the shoreline. The waters here look very inviting but beware as the sea is not safe for swimming owing to very strong undercurrents.

Rishikonda Beach about 10 km northeast from the city is a tourist delight with its unspoilt virgin beaches. You could wade in the seas here – but it is not recommended to go deep into these waters either.

Araku Valley - 112 kilometres from Vizag

Araku Valley, popularly known as Araku, is a scenic hill station in the Vishakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh. Relatively lesser known, the hill station has retained its pristine charm.

At an elevation of about 3200 ft, Araku is famous for its coffee plantations surrounded by beautiful gardens, streams, waterfalls and valleys that are covered with lush green forests. Situated in the Eastern Ghats, the hill station is about 112 km southeast of Vishakhapatnam.

Visakhapatnam Junction is on the main broad gauge railway line from Calcutta to Chennai that runs along the coast. There are many connections available from other parts of the country including Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata and Vijayawada.

More comfortable bus travel by way of Volvo buses that ply the route to Vizag are from Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Vijayawada.

Best time to visit Visakhapatanam

The winter season is the  best time to visit Visakhapatnam  when the days are pleasant and night temperatures are very comfortable. This makes sightseeing so much more comfortable and forays into the neighbouring places like Bheemlipatnam and the Araku Valley pleasurable experiences. The day time temperatures remain an amiable 30 degrees C and the night temperatures a brisk 16 degree C at the height of winter during December.

It gets stiflingly hot and humid in the summer months with temperatures hovering in the region of 40° C during the day, but because of it's location next to the sea the evening cool down with the sea breeze in the late afternoon.

The warmest months are April, May and June. The monsoons come in late June and it rains intermittently till November. October-November is the cyclone season when sometimes they can hit the coast of Vizag coming in from the Bay of Bengal. Late November to February is a very pleasant time and also the time when major festivals such as Diwali and Navarathri are celebrated with great cheer.
