Thanjavur gained prominence during the period of Chola Kings, who made it as their capital. It is known as the Granary of the South India lying in the deltaic region of the famous river Cauvery and criss-crossed by lengthy network of irrigation canals.

BRIHADEESWARA TEMPLE - Listed as a World Heritage site, it is characterised by its unique structure.This temple, the main attraction of Tanjore , it was constructed out of a single piece of granite weighing around 80 tonnes  was built by RajarajaChola and reflects the contribution of the Cholas to the development of arts here. Unlike other South Indian temples, the Brihadeeswara temple has a towering vimana and a small gopuram. The statue of Nandi was weighs 25 tonnes and is one of the largest of Nandi bulls in India.

THE PALACE - The Palace was started and being built by the Nayaks in the mid-16th century but was completed by the Marathas . This is an  important tourist destination. It is characterised by its vast corridors, large halls, its shady courtyards and observation towers.. The palace now functions as the Royal Museum, housing a collection of royal remains.

ART GALLERY - It has a collection of around 250 Chola bronze statues and 150 stone statues dating back to the 9th and 12th century and belonging to the many groups like the Bhairava, Umasahita Shiva, Kali and Rama Lakshmana. The Art Gallery is another place that should not be missed while visiting Tanjore.

SARASWATI MAHAL LIBRARY - This library has a huge collection of 30,000 palm leaf and paper manuscripts written in Indian and European languages. Built during 1700 AD and located by the art gallery, It  has some of  Tamil treatises on medicine and commentaries from the Sangam period.

How to Reach Thanjavur by Rail

Thanjavur is on the route of many trains travelling between Chennai, Madurai and Kanyakumari. It also has direct connections to and from Chennai’s Egmore Station. Trichy is an important junction of Southern Railways and is on the route of almost all southbound trains to Kanyakumari, Madurai or Rameswaram. Passenger trains ply between Trichy and Thanjavur, but roadways buses are better with frequent services.

How to Reach Thanjavur by Bus

54 km from Trichy, Thanjavur is connected by excellent roads to Trichy (NH 67), to Madurai, Chennai (NH45) and Kanyakumari (NH7). Inter city buses, taxis and tourist buses are available at Trichy.
