Udhagamandalam better known,  Ooty Called the Queen of Hill Stations picturesque, green, as Ooty is the most popular hill station in the South. This paradise remained unknown to the great southern dynasties and it took the British to discover it in the early 1800s. Tribe called Todas are the first inhabitants of this land ooty, Located in the Western ghats at a height of 2240m, Udhagamandalam is the headquarters of the Nilgiris district where the two ghats ranges meet. Nature has blessed  with this region, which is by far the most beautiful in the state. Apart from coffee and tea plantations, trees like confiers, eucalptus, pine and wattle dot the hillside in Udhagamandalam and its encirons. Summer temperature is rarely higher than 25°c with a minimum of 10°c and winter is are distinctly cooler with a high of 21°c and a low 5°c. Curiously enough. The British who constructed the first railway line in the area, made it the summer capital of the Madras Presidency and making it accessible.

Ootyhas two  more brothers with smaller hill stations of Coonoor - 19 kms and Kothagiri 31 kms from Ooty.Nilgiri is India's first biosphere. Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden is one of the best tourist attraction places which attract the tourist from all over the world. An explicit collection of flowering trees, beautiful shrubs, and rare colored lilies are seen.

Ooty Boat House  Ooty Lake

Ooty Boat house is just 1.5 kms from the central Bus Stand (also near the Railway station) . For the curious, this lake was artificially formed by John Sullivan, the founder of Ooty, in 1823-25.

Rose Garden Ooty  Rose Garden

Rose Park is situated in the heart of Ooty town and it is located less than a km from Charring Cross at Vijayanagaram, the rose garden is laid on 10 acres of land. This garden has been beautifully laid out in terraces with rose tunnels, pergolas and bowers with rose creepers.

Doddabetta Peak Ooty        

The Doddabetta Peak stands at an altitude of 2,623 meters. It is the highest point in the district, making it possibly the best vantage point around Ooty. It is merely 10kms from Ooty.

Pykara Lake Ooty     

The placid lake of Pykara, amid the lush green valleys is a lovely getaway from Ooty. Here, a calm lake is surrounded by forests. There is a forest rest House at Pykara

HPF (Hindustan Photo Film)

The HPF, one of the major industrial units ot the district, is a public sector enterprise. This unit is located (about 5 Km away from Ooty railway station) over a sprawling area of over 300 acres, near the Ooty golf-links on the Ooty- Mysore road. The HPF was inaugurated by Mrs. Indra Gandhi, Prime Minister, in January, 1967.

Kalhatty water falls

The picturesque waterfalls come down a 36 m drop. A popular spot for picnics and treks.his water falls could be seen in ootymysore route at a distance of 13 km from ooty.

But falls could be seen in a particular season from September to November. The height of this falls is 40m.

Situated on the coonoor Road This valley is the second largest valley in the world.

The Mukkurthi Peak And National Park

Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary – 18 Kms

An ideal adventurous place, located in Nilgiri Hills, where the offshoot of the Western Ghats meet the Eastern Ghats. Area :32,155 hectares. Along side the adventures of the sanctuary, you will also find a varied mixture of flat land, open grassland, swamp, valley and nullas at this place.

Sims park–Coonoor

Sim’s Park is a 12-hectare park in Coonoor, which exhibits over 1000 species of plants.

Kodanad View Point - Kotagiri

It is about 16 kms. fromKotagiri on the eastern edges of the Nilgiris. On either side of the road one can see the panoramic view of the tea estates and the river Moyar is breath taking.

Dolphin Nose

Dolphin’s Nose around 10 km. away from Coonoor is an excellent viewpoint. It encompasses the Catherine Falls. Lambs nose is another point on the way to Dolphins Nose

St. Catherine Water Falls

From Dolphin's Nose of Coonoor one can have a magnificent view of St. Catherine Water falls which is about 250 feet height. But it can be reached from Kotagiri at a distance of 8 kms. To reach the top of the hills tourist should take a diversion at Aravenu on Kotagiri - Mettupalayam road.

Best time to visit Ooty

Ooty is a 365 days destination except monsoon season that starts from the month of July and August , if you like rainy season then you can enjoy. The best time to visit is during the peak tourist season when the schools have vacation and the plains get stifling hot in May and June. You can also enjoy the summer festival is in May when there are flower shows and boat races.

Winters are  beautiful and worth going, if you enjoy the clouds and the mist floating into your face then plan for a  cold winter months from December to February, but. Weather wise it is still great from September to November. The Mudumalai National Park is best in September-October and January-March when the foliage thins out.

How to reach Ooty ?

How to Reach Ooty by Air

The nearest airport is at Coimbatore. There are flight services to Coimbatore from Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai. You could also take a train up to Mettupalayam and from there, take the quaint hill train uptoOoty, 35 kms away. You can also hire a private car or taxi or take a bus up to Ooty. The road winds up with loops and bends and in the rains gets washed away in parts.

How to Reach Ooty by Rail

The real way to arrive at Ooty is by the Blue Mountain Railway (weather permitting ) this is a life time experience . The train begins at Mettupalayam (35 km from Coimbatore), and makes a short stop at Conoor for refreshments. Mettupalayam has direct connections with Chennai and Coimbatore.

How to Reach Ooty by Bus

There are buses to Ooty from all over the state, including Chennai (535 km). Or you can come the Mysore way from the state of Karnataka – there are many many more hairpin bends on this route so be prepared for a roller coaster trip. Rent a car if you’d rather not risk the buses, and keep it for the rest of your stay..... really, the most convenient thing to do. Unlike Kodai, which is quite compact, Ooty spreads out over several hills. A car at your disposal would save you the hassle of finding a new ride every time.
