Kovalam is famous for its serene beauty and pristine beaches. Kovalam consists of three main beaches, the most popular being the Lighthouse Beach and Hawa Beach. Kovalam with its unspoilt beaches was once a hippie paradise, but it's increasing popularity among tourists has been a major dissuasion of late.
No longer, an undiscovered rural idyll, Kovalam has made rapid strides towards resort-station and now this beach resort is one of the biggest draws to `god’s own country’. Kovalam still has a lovely shoreline and sun kissed beaches lined with coconut trees and night fishermen who go out for the daily catch.
So close to Trivandrum it’s a convenient hop-skip-and-jump away from the city scene…and definitely the place to go if your prime motive for the Kerala trip is an Ayurvedic massage.

How to reach Kovalam?
The main attractions for sightseeing in Kovalam are its three crescent shaped beaches- Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach and Ashok Beach.
The Lighthouse beach lies in the southern most part of Kovalam. The Vizhinjam Lighthouse, from which the beach gets its name, dominates the landscape. The Lighthouse Beach is the most popular amongst tourists with its lovely sun kissed sandy beaches. There are a number of restaurants near the beach that serve delicious seafood.
The Hawa Beach also known as Eve’s Beach is a fairly clean beach and is separated from the Lighthouse beach by the Edakallu foreland, which is a great spot to watch the sunset from.
The third beach- Ashok Beach draws its name from the Hotel Ashok. The KovalaJama Masjid is a small mosque that stands on the Ashok Beach. You can also visit the Ganapathi Temple nearby and pay homage to Lord Ganapathi.
As Kovalam is only 15 Kms from Thrivanthapuram or Trivandrum you can combine this place also along with this tour.
Alert!
As tempting as it may be to venture out into the sea you must be careful as the sea here has a strong under current. Even though there are alert lifeguards on every beach it’s important to exercise caution. Only swim in area marked by green flags and never venture out to sea after drinking.

How to Reach Kovalam by Air
The Thiruvananthapuram Airport is about 10 Kms away from the tranquil shores of Kovalam. A prepaid taxi is perhaps the best way out of the airport to the fishing village. Charges could range anywhere around Rs 350. Private cabs may charge less but it’s hard to get the right deal. Auto rickshaws at the exit will also end up being equally expensive as the taxis.
Backpackers and those on a shoestring budget can buy an easy ride to Kovalam via the swanky new shuttles launched by KSRTC.
How to Reach Kovalam by Rail
A well laid network of trains connects Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) to various Indian cities. You can take a Trivandrum Express or Trivandrum mail from Chennai Central or opt for the Kanyayakumari Express from Bangalore City Junction. These trains will lead you to the Trivandrum Central, a busy railway station handling a large share of rail traffic to Kerala. Here you will find taxis, buses and autos to reach Kovalam.
Those coming in from Delhi can check the schedule for Kerala Express that runs from the New Delhi Railway Station on a weekly basis. Passengers starting off from Mumbai can hop into the Mumbai-Kanyakumari Express at ChatrapathiShivaji Railway Terminus.
How to Reach Kovalam by Bus
The neighbouring state departments offer a diverse range of services to Kovalam. Volvos, express and deluxe shuttles and local buses from Bangalore, Mangalore and Chennai serve Trivandrum.
A smart option is to go for rentals. Most drivers take the NH 47 highway from Bangalore which is close to the Shornur Road. If you’re renting a car at Trivandrum, use the Trivandrum Bypass Road for smooth transfers.
Being near the sea makes Kovalam really a year-round destination weather-wise. The actual season and probably the best time to visitEJMb is from September to March. The prices shoot up during the Christmas-New Year week as do the number of tourists, so it might be wise to avoid this period.
